A reminder, the California Department of Insurance will be bringing a team to Pasadena City College to assist our residents in getting help, such as understanding their insurance policies, being aware of the resources available during the rebuilding and recovery process, and answering their insurance-related questions. Participants are encouraged to bring a copy of their insurance policy, declaration page, and any relevant correspondence related to their concerns. Walk-ins will be on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Each policy and company is different, but things that are often covered include:

• Damage to your home's structure
• Contamination from ash or smoke
• Damage to attached structures like decks, or to detached fences or sheds
• Loss of use
  • Rental or Hotel stays
  • Restaurant meals
  • Extra commute costs

The first step is to file a claim with your insurance company. After that they should assign an insurance “Adjuster” within a couple of days. The Eaton fire event is so big that companies are using adjusters from out of state, who may be in different timezones.

The adjuster will be the person who officially negotiates the process with you. Keep records of the conversations you have. Email may be more useful because of the archive of the discussion compared to texts or apps.
