Resources for the Eaton Fire
The Eaton fire, which occurred on 2024-01-07 in the evening during a major Santa Ana wind and burned thousands of structures in Altadena provided the impetus to set up this community wiki. However we hope the wiki will remain as a knowledge base of resources well beyond the fire.
For now, we will provide some important resources for fire recovery, and notes on meetings and updates on events related to the fire here.
Community Open Source Intel on the fire
Ben / AI6YR Mastodon feed Ben, a radio amateur with callsign AI6YR has been providing an amazing feed of wildfire related information via his Mastodon account.
Ben used to work with Watch Duty a nonprofit that has an app that can give you community provided updates on wildfires. They are a great general resource that can connect you to more information from firefighters and give summaries of govt informational meetings and etc.
Government Sites for Fire info
LA County has sent people into the closed off region and are assessing individual structures one at a time, and mapping them on their website, including a picture of each one, and various statistics. You can try to find information about your individual structure here. NOTE: black icons on the map mean NO DAMAGE, and then it goes green = light damage up through orange and red = total loss.
fire.ca.gov Eaton Fire incident site
This contains information about the firefighting efforts, containment, status reports, etc.
According to recent meetings, the FEMA site will deny your assistance request if you apply now and you have insurance. This is a technical glitch that is being worked on. We will update this site with more information when we hear about it.
The LA county emergency website can help you find info on all of the fires ongoing or other emergency issues. They have a sign up for Email alerts, and an emergency map.
